What we know about Meta

What it is

Meta's first Canadian data centre, in Sturgeon County north of Edmonton. Meta puts the investment at more than CA$13 billion and the facility at about one gigawatt. Ground has been broken, which makes it the clearest example on this site of a project that is real and building rather than announced.

Why it matters for the grid

It is one of exactly two projects holding a piece of the grid operator's 1,200 MW interim large-load allocation through 2028. In other words, it is not just permitted, it has a connection — which most of the queue does not.

The jobs, attributed

Meta and the Government of Alberta say the project means more than 3,000 construction workers at peak, more than 300 permanent jobs, and about $250 million a year in government revenue. Those figures come from the company and the province, and we report them as theirs, not as independently verified.
